Baby Costs

Price Your Own Diaper and Formula Bill

Eight to twelve diapers a day is the figure to build on. How to turn counts into a monthly number, and why cost per diaper beats cost per pack.

This is the line nobody budgets and everybody notices. It is also the easiest one to calculate exactly, because it is just counts multiplied by unit prices.

Key figures

  • 8 to 12 Daily diaper changes in the early months
  • 300 Example: diapers needed in one month

Start from the count, not the price

The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that once parents settle into a routine they change 8 to 12 diapers a day in the early months. Call it ten.

  • Ten a day is about 300 a month.
  • Multiply by your own cost per diaper.

That is the whole calculation, and it produces a number that is right for your shop and your brand rather than for a national average.

Cost per diaper, not cost per pack

Pack sizes differ between brands and between sizes of the same brand, and the count per pack usually falls as the size goes up. A bigger box is not automatically better value.

Divide the price by the number of diapers printed on the pack. Write the number on your phone. Do it once for the three brands you would actually use and you will not have to think about it again.

Formula, if you use it

The single most useful fact about formula is regulatory: the FDA specifies nutrient requirements that every infant formula sold in the United States must meet, and store brands are held to the same standard as the expensive ones. Specialised formulas for particular medical conditions are the exception.

So the comparison is mostly about tolerance, form and price:

  • Powder, concentrate or ready-to-feed. Ready-to-feed is the most expensive per ounce by a wide margin and the most convenient at 3am.
  • Cost per prepared ounce is the comparison that works, exactly as with diapers. The tin’s yield is on the label.
  • Changing brands is a conversation with your pediatrician, not a price decision, if your baby has any feeding difficulty.

The rest of the monthly list

  • Wipes. Bought in bulk, cheap per unit, and used faster than expected.
  • Clothes. Babies outgrow sizes in weeks. This is the category where secondhand makes obvious sense.
  • Laundry. More loads, more detergent, a real if small line.
Where help exists

WIC provides formula and food benefits for eligible families, and the income limit is higher than most people expect. Many communities also have diaper banks. Both are covered in the WIC article on this site.

The diaper subscription comparison examines unit prices and the risk of unused stock. If reusable diapers are another option, the cloth diaper cost guide adds washing and replacement expenses to the comparison.

Questions people ask

How many diapers does a newborn use a day?

The AAP describes parents changing 8 to 12 diapers a day in the early months. The number falls as the baby gets older.

Are expensive formulas better?

All infant formula sold in the United States must meet the same FDA nutrient requirements, so the difference is usually form, tolerance and price rather than nutritional adequacy.

Is it cheaper to use cloth diapers?

Over a full year, usually yes, once the upfront purchase is spread out, but it depends on how much you pay for laundry and how much your time is worth to you.

How much newborn-size should I buy in advance?

One pack. Some babies are born too big for the size and others leave it within a fortnight.
